Bast wasnât back soon. Darkness had fallen by the time heâd finished up with his tasks and the cityâs leaders. Plates of food had quietly appeared on his desk from Ana as he worked, and little Kaia had come and curled up on one of his chairs for a while. But his Hellcat hadnât hunted him down to see what had kept him.
âShe spent the day with Tir and Kaia,â Ra said, taking pity on him when he checked his phone for the ninth time and told himself it was good she hadnât reached out. Even though heâd bled his feelings into words for her before heâd shut her out. Words she hadnât returned.
âAny news from Mica?â he asked, ignoring his friendâs smirk at his obvious deflection.
âNo.â
âHave you been in touch with him since that call?â
âNo.â
Bast looked up at Ra, momentarily distracted from his own aching heart by the uncharacteristic neutrality in his friendâs voice.
âEverything OK?â he asked softly.
âHeâs the consummate politician. He knew exactly what he was doing when he said what he did. It was a threat. And Kaia was the leverage. Children are not fucking leverage,â Ra said, emotion finally returning to his voice as his words became clipped with anger.
âMica was just playing the game,â Bast said carefully, tidying his desk as he stood to leave.
He was still furious at the Earth Lord, but it had been years since Ra had shown a genuine interest in anyone after theyâd left his immediate orbit. He wasnât going to encourage his friend to make a rash decision to end whatever potential they had going based on one conversation.
âAnd if thatâs how he wants to play it, he can find someone else to play with. You need to get going. The artificer will bail if youâre late,â Ra said.
Bast sighed and dropped the subject. Heâd tried, at least. Pausing by Ra on his way out, he offered his raised hand at heart-heightâthe handclasp ironically reserved for oneâs closest friends and the enemies against whom you needed to prove your strength. People who made you feel, be it good or bad. When Ra returned the grip, he pulled his friend into a hug.
âThanks for having my back on this.â
âAlways, brother,â Ra said. âI just wish it wasnât necessary.â
Bast flicked Hel a text as he made his way to the elevatorâOn my way. Flying out in fifteen.
She hadnât replied by the time he reached the dark penthouse. The only illumination in the living space was the dim light from the entryway and what little moonlight made it through the windows.
âHel!â he called, irritated that she wasnât ready even though heâd kept her waiting for the better part of a day.
There was no response. Nor was there when he knocked softly on her bedroom door. He knew she was in there, their bond thrumming with proximity. Was she asleep? He stepped into her room and glanced around. Still no sign of her, but the tug in his soul was drawing him to the en-suite door.
